Ok so since many people in Canadian boxing are posting about me today I’ll explain what happened.
Two months ago I asked for the rematch with Ulysse. I heard nothing in return. A month ago I did the same thing because it would be a good opportunity, I haven’t been able to get a fight in months and I heard that he had a fight deal now with Dazn. Good opportunity so I asked. No response. 2 weeks ago I asked again. Nothing. Now yesterday I get a call and I’m told that everything has been planned and now the fight is on. After a total of 6 weeks of no response. Now YESTERDAY they come to me with this offer. They want to give me 4 weeks to prepare for a guy who I edged a close decision over on a full camp, who has already had at least a month of focused training. Remember that before the last fight we did a press tour 8 weeks out and had a full camp and build up. They’re attempting to use me to boost Ulysse into stardom with his first Dazn win on the first big show in North America, attempting to build his name off of me and over my crushed career. The plan is to catch me at a disadvantage by giving me half of the notice I got for the first fight. It’s a typical boxing negotiation strategy, for those who are unfamiliar with weird, bias moves like this. As far as I can remember, the winner doesn’t get the major disadvantage in the rematch. Unless it’s political. Which this is. Yves comes with David Lemieux and EOTTM (who do great business I’m not hating, just stating), who have already made the big deal and are now on the A side. So they call the shots. I went and checked, Yves has been training for this date for months. He knew about this deal since Dazn came in. Great opportunity, I’ve got nothing against him for that. In fact, I want this rematch too, but I’m not going to take the fight with one month’s notice. Period. I’m not contributing to my own demise and his rise at my expense. The boxing Twitter and Facebook experts can tell me whatever they want, it’s actually my choice. You think that this exact same thing hasn’t happened to me before in boxing ? How about the Van Heerden fight, 1 month notice, the next month he was all over the fight scene sparring Mcgregor. How about the Ponomarev fight, he went 31-0 with top rank, I had 3 weeks notice and for that fight and it almost drove me into depression because I knew what I had done to myself. How about the O’Connor fight, it was literally this exact same play as this one yesterday. Social media is so funny, everyone thinks that they are obligated to tell you how to live your life. Remember to do things for your own peace of mind first. If it feels wrong, stick to your gut, don’t even let your own people tell you you are wrong if you feel you are right. I never agreed to a 4 week camp and I will never do that to myself again. The big thing is, I used to NEED to fight. I used to fight for every penny I earned. Now I don’t. So they can all pressure me and demand, I’ll do what’s best for my mental health and my life. Like I always tell my guys, “boxing is life, but life is bigger than boxing”. I ain’t selling my soul today, in the future, or ever. I’m sticking to my guns and I apologize to absolutely no one for the decisions that I make. I’m looking out for one person in this boxing game… ME
